Wilson Benesch loudspeakers with carbon fiber cabinets

Wilson Benesch deploys advanced carbon fiber technology in their advanced loudspeaker designs made in the UK

The A.C.T. One Evolution is the latest Wilson Benesch loudspeaker to be updated with geometry series technologies and is now available in colored carbon fiber! This iconic speaker, originally launched in 1995, broke new ground in the industry; first loudspeaker with a sloping top to reduce room interactions, first with an advanced composite curved cabinet based on carbon fiber, and first to exploit a solid metal baffle to mount the drive units. It was the reference speaker for several reviewers and received recognition and awards around the globe.

For over twenty five years, Wilson Benesch has brought advanced engineering and manufacture to the further the art and performance of sound reproducing equipment. Wilson Benesch has always believed that true advancement in sound reproduction necessitates the use of materials with specific physical requirements based on a fundamental understanding of how materials behave and interact with sonic borne energy.

Most readily available materials used in loudspeakers and turntables are simply not stiff enough - they vibrate in the presence of sonic energy and drain away energy. Adding mass enables more energy to be stored and subsequently released usually at a lower frequency after some delay thus passing on the problem to another area in the sound spectrum. Rather than dabble with the inherent limitations of conventional wood-based materials and band-aiding the problems: far smarter to use better materials without inherent problems in the first place. And so Wilson Benesch, with the assistance of government grants and in partnership with Sheffield University, developed isotactic polypropylene, advanced carbon fiber composites using molten Poly Ethylene Terephthalate and other materials that are vastly superior to regular polypropylene and carbon fiber in plastic used by other manufacturers.

Wilson Benesch then combined these materials with the engineering expertise located in Sheffield (a town in the heart of the UK's industrial revolution with a proud heritage in steel manufacturing) to build loudspeakers with curved carbon fiber monocoque cabinets incorporating hand welded steel and other complex composite materials that are fabricated with precision tolerances of 0.005mm; far exceeding what most other manufacturers can achieve. Designs such as the Discovery loudspeaker - a one-piece stand-mounted loudspeaker with clam-shell Isobaric bass drivers, and the Torus infrasonic generator - with a solid steel core and 3D cross directional carbon fiber diaphragm, are totally unique within the industry.

These advanced materials are so effective in managing vibration that Wilson Benesch has evolved the art of loudspeaker monocoque structural design to the point where in the new Geometry series, internal bracing is virtually eliminated altogether. Installing loudspeaker drivers with computer designed magnetics into these extremely stiff and silent cabinets result in loudspeakers with some of the very best signal to noise ratios in the world. The dynamics of the latest flagship "Cardinal" are astounding.

The advantages of superbly engineered drivers and resonant-free cabinets are particularly apparent at higher volumes where the sound is stunningly clean, detailed and vibrant making others sound like veiled recordings of recordings of recordings of the original sound. Superb custom wood finishes are available that look stunning in many environments from traditional to modern loft living.

Wilson Benesch also maintains a strong interest in turntables, tonearms and cartridges where again carbon fiber composite technology is used. To celebrate their 25th anniversary and to reaffirm their commitment to the vinyl medium, Wilson Benesch launched the Circle 25 Turntable. This classic record player features carbon fiber suspension and a hyperbolic carbon fiber composite tonearm that uses a unique kinematic bearing.

All Wilson Benesch products are custom built to order.
